The Basics of Playing Blackjack

Blackjack is a game of chance and skill that involves the use of cards to determine whether the player or dealer has a better hand. The dealer shuffles cards, and then deals two to each of the players at the table. The players are then invited to hit or stand based on the number of cards they have.

The aim of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by drawing a card value that goes over 21. The dealer does not have to have a hand that goes over 21, but can have one if they wish, as long as their cards add up to less than 21.

Dealing Protocol

The exact protocol for dealing a blackjack hand varies from casino to casino, but generally the dealer’s first card is dealt face down. The dealer then flips his second card and places it underneath the first card.

Depending on the casino, the dealer may also offer the option to place an insurance bet on their hand. This is a side bet that pays 2 to 1 if the dealer’s first card is an Ace.

Basic Strategy

The basic strategy of playing blackjack is to memorize the four actions that players can take during each hand: surrender, split, double down, and hit. Once a player has these strategies memorized, they can play the game with ease.

Learning to Deal

A blackjack dealer must deal the cards in front of all players at the table. The dealer must ask each player their action before deciding to deal them another card or move on to the next player. This process is important to ensure that the dealer does not skip any players or make mistakes in their handling of the cards.

When the dealers initial cards have been dealt, they must peak to determine if they have a Blackjack. This is a hand that contains an ace and any of the ten cards.

If a player has a Blackjack, they will win the hand. If they do not, the hand will be a push and they will receive their original wager back.

Increasing Your Bets

If you have a winning hand, you can increase your bet by as much as 2 times the amount of your original bet. This is one of the most profitable ways to play blackjack, but be careful not to overdo it.

Wonging / Back Counting

Named after Blackjack author Stanford Wong, this strategy is a popular way for players to reduce their bet spread by only betting on hands in which they have a favorable count. However, casinos have become more aware of this practice and are constantly watching out for players who engage in this method.

Blackjack is a popular game and is easy to learn, but it does require a certain level of knowledge and expertise to succeed in the game. To learn the basics, take a basic strategy class or attend a professional blackjack school.
