Domino is a game of chance and skill played on a flat, square, or rectangular board with numbered ends. Each end has a different number of spots, usually from one to six. A domino can have a number on each side, or it can be blank, a “zero” suit, and some sets are designed to play multiple suits of numbers.
A domino set can be made from a variety of materials, and the pips (marks) on each side may be printed or hand-painted. Plastic dominoes are the most common, but there are also sets made of wood (e.g., ebony or mother of pearl); stone (e.g., marble, granite or soapstone); metal (e.g., brass or pewter); ceramic clay; and other materials such as frosted glass or crystal. These sets typically have a more elegant look, and are heavier than their polymer counterparts.
While there are many ways to play domino, most games are categorized as either blocking or scoring. In blocking games, the objective is to empty one’s opponent’s hands; in scoring games, points are scored by adding up the pips on all the remaining tiles in one’s opponent’s hand.
The earliest known set of dominoes was probably Chinese, dating to the 12th or 13th century. A set of these included both block and scoring games, but did not feature the military-civilian suits of Western dominoes.
